MOUNT CARMEL SCHOOL

MOUNT CARMEL ELEMENTARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL. ESTABLISHED BY THE SISTERS OF LORETTO IN THE 1880 S (PICTURE ABOVE IS OF 1889) THERE WERE MAJOR REPAIRS MADE AND THE SCHOOL WAS USED WITH OTHER REPAIRS UNTIL THE SCHOOL WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1950 AND REBUILT AND MAINTAINED AS ALTERNATIVE TO PUBLIC SCHOOL UNTIL COST OF OPERATION FORCED THE CLOSING. THE REBUILDING OF THE SCHOOL AND CONVENT WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN LARGE PART BY THE CONTRIBUTION FROM CONRAD HILTON, AND THUS THE SCHOOL WAS RENAMED IN HONOR TO HIS FATHER AND MOTHER HILTON MT. CARMEL.

THO THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE THERE WAS AN ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS THAT LIVED IN THE OUT OF TOWN AREAS SERVED BY THE SOCORRO SCHOOL DISTRICT WHERE BY STUDENTS COULD RIDE THE SCHOOL BUSES IN ORDER TO ATTEND MT. CARMEL.
